Wausau Woodchucks News Release

The Wisconsin Woodchucks scored 10 runs Monday night, but were unable to come back from an early 15-run lead and fell to the visiting Battle Creek Bombers 24-10.

The Bombers tied an all-time Northwoods League record for runs scored in a single game, using 23 hits, 11 base-on-balls and two Woodchucks errors to score 24 runs.

After allowing fourteen runs over the first three innings, the ‘Chucks used an eight-run fifth inning to cut the Bombers' lead to five, before the Bombers piled on late in a game that lasted over three and a half hours.

Jordan Luvisi started the game for Wisconsin, and allowed five runs to score on five hits and an error, highlighted by a two-run Bryce Redeker homerun, before Luvisi succumbed to the 35-pitch inning rule and ended his night prematurely after one inning.

Zach Wendorf made his Woodchucks debut in the second inning, and fared no better - allowing three runs to score in the second inning, before walking the bases loaded and allowing a grand slam to start the third, prior to allowing a two-out, two-run homer later in the inning.

Derek Peterson relieved Wendorf in the fourth and stopped the bleeding, striking out two and facing the minimum after the Bombers sent 25 hitters to the plate over the first three innings.

Quickly down 14-0, the ‘Chucks, who mustered only one base runner over the first three frames, got their first run on the board off Battle Creek starter Ben Ballantine in the fourth frame, as Carlos Escobar led off the inning with a solo shot to centerfield.

The Bombers added one in their half of the fifth, before the ‘Chucks hung a crooked number in the their half of the inning, miraculously cutting a fourteen-run lead to six.

Working against Ballantine, the ‘Chucks strung together a walk and four hits to score four, prior to notching four unearned runs with three base-on-balls, a passed ball, and a Brian Carroll double.

Bryan McCabe relieved Ballantine after five runs had scored, ended his night with seven hits, three walks, and eight runs allowed though four 2/3 innings of work - meaning he was unable to record a win after being afforded 15 runs.

Carlos Escobar cut the lead to five in the sixth off McCabe, as he hit his second leadoff homerun of the night.

After coming on and stranding two runners in the sixth inning, Jonathon Boersma - who pitched three times over the past five days - allowed a bases-loaded two-RBI single to Brendan Norton, giving Battle Creek a 17-10 lead.

After Scott Simmons came on in relief for the Bombers and put down the ‘Chucks in order in the seventh, Boersma allowed Battle Creek to bat-around in the eighth and score five more runs.

Jake Long relieved Boersma in the ninth, and surrendered two more runs to give the Bombers a share of the league record.

Jordan Luvisi took the loss, falling to 1-8, while Bryan McCabe took the win in his first Northwoods League outing.

The two teams will meet again Tuesday night, as Adair Robles makes his second start at Athletic Park on Woody Texting Bobblehead night.
