Madison Mallards News Release
EAU CLAIRE, WI - August 8, 2011. The troubles at Carson Park continued for the Madison Mallards as they were defeated by the Eau Claire Express 10-5 Monday night in Eau Claire. The loss was the third straight in Eau Claire dating back to the first half of the season, and all three losses have come in games with crucial playoff implications. The loss also brings the Mallards back to .500 and 3.5 games back of first place in the South Division.
The Mallards played well over the first five and a half innings, but come the bottom of the sixth, Eau Claire really got going offensively.
Madison scored first the game's first two runs by tallying one in each of the first two innings. Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) hit a sacrifice fly to score leadoff hitter Justin Parr (Illinois) in the first, and Michael Handel (Minnesota) drew a bases loaded walk to score Willie Argo (Illinois) in the second).
Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) drove in Kyle Moody (St. Scholastica) with a single in the fourth, and Matt Juengel (Texas A&M) hit a triple to score the final two runs for the Mallards in the top of inning number six.
Eau Claire was kept at bay early on by Mallards' starter Jonathon Crawford (Florida). The Express were only able to score once in the five innings that Crawford pitched, which came in the third on a double by Ryan Shober (UIC) that scored Tony Vocca (Yavapai). In all, Crawford allowed the one run on one hit. He also had five walks and seven strikeouts. Crawford, who did not receive a decision in the game, left due to a high pitch count of 98 following the fifth inning.
Once Crawford left the game, Eau Claire really hammered the Mallards' bullpen.
Denny Clement (Texas A&M) came on in relief of Crawford and allowed four runs (three earned) without retiring a batter. Clement, who had an ERA lower than 1.00 only a few days back, saw that stat increase to 3.60. Eric Schmitz (Wisconsin - Whitewater) replaced Clement and gave up the go-ahead runs in the seventh that eventually doomed the Mallards in the end. Schmitz (1-1) was charged with his first loss of the season. All-Star Matt Milroy (Illinois), who is usually lights out, gave up an additional four runs in the ninth inning. In all, the Express we led by Shober, who had two hits and four RBI. Zac Fisher (New Mexico State) also had two RBI, and his college teammate Parker Hipp tallied two hits as well.
The Mallards actually out-hit the Express at the plate 10-7, but one defensive error and eight walks allowed proved to be critical in the loss.
Seven of the nine batters in the Madison lineup tallied hits, and the two players who were hitless reached base at least once via a walk in the game. Juengel led the Mallards with two hits and two RBI, and both Owen and Handel collected two hits and an RBI.
The win went to Eau Claire reliever Evan Zerff (Long Island). Zerff pitched an inning and allowed just one hit to improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Mallards and Express will play for the final time in 2011 Tuesday evening in a 6:35 p.m. game at Carson Park. Following that game, the Mallards will conclude their three-game road trip in Wausau against the Woodchucks in another 6:35 p.m. start at Athletic Park.
