Mallards off to Carson Park to Start Two-Game Series

August 8, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - August 8, 2011. The Madison Mallards will travel to Carson Park in Eau Claire to begin a two-game series with the Express at 6:35 p.m. Monday. The series will be the first time that the Mallards will play at Carson Park since being eliminated from playoff contention in the first half. Both teams have since fallen back in the South Division standings in the second half, and a win by the Mallards would officially eliminate the Express from seeing playoff action for the first time since 2008.

The Mallards will be playing on the heels of a big victory on Sunday in which they were the only team in the South Division to play. Sitting three games back, the series with the Express is incredibly important and a loss Monday would severely damage the Mallards' hopes of making the postseason.

Madison will turn to Jonathon Crawford (Florida) to keep Eau Claire at bay. Crawford is 2-2 with a 5.52 earned run average on the season. Crawford had faced the Express once this season, pitching one inning in relief and allowing no runs on one hit in the Mallards' 7-1 win on July 22. The Mallards have been known to see some success in Crawford's 10 appearances, going 7-3 in games in which the right- hander has thrown.

Eau Claire will counter with lefty Matt McDaniel (San Diego State). McDaniel has struggled a bit this season, going 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA over 11 appearances. He will be making his tenth start of the season Monday, and his third overall appearance against Madison. In two previous games versus the Ducks, McDaniel went a combined total of 7.2 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. One of his five losses came in an 8-4 loss at Warner Park on June 14.

The series finale against Eau Claire will be played Tuesday, also at 6:35 p.m.
