Wausau Woodchucks News Release
After a 17 consecutive home winning streak the Woodchucks fell against Battle Creek 10-4 on Monday night, the first home loss since July 3rd.
The Woodchucks got off to a slow start early, giving up two runs in the first inning to the Battle Creek Bombers when Conor Costello drove in Casey Yocum, and Daniel Rocket against Woodchucks starter, Brendon Hayden.
Another run crossed when Dylan Delaney drove in Conor Costello as all Bombers got a shot to bat in the top of the first inning, stumping the "ËChucks 3-0.
Hayden was removed after just one inning and was relieved by Chevas Numata, as the Woodchucks scrambled to make defensive changes to slow the bats of the Bombers.
The defensive decision deemed successful, as Numata shut down the side on three fly outs to contain the deficit to three.
The deficit closed to two runs when newcomer Matt Richer slaped a slow roller to the third baseline, scoring Joe Serrano from third to tack on the first Woodchuck run of the night.
The score remained, until a wild pitch got past Bombers catcher Kyle Figgins that brought around Madison Carter to score the second run for the Woodchucks in the third inning.
Just as the Bombers lead began to diminish, the sunlight assisted a lost ball in left field sending Matt Richer back to the wall as the ball soared past, scoring another run, and establishing once again, the two run lead.
Although no errors were committed through five innings, Matt Richer struggled in left field, playing his first game in left field as a catcher that hobbled the Woodchucks defense.
Besides the defensive skirmish the Bombers continued to pound the Woodchuck bullpen as Daniel Rocket blasted a two run shot to center field off of Chevas Numata, increasing the deficit to four in the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning, John Roberts came in to relieve Numata, and ran into a few more problems when two more Bombers came in to score, mounting a six run lead.
The lead grew once more in the eighth when Jeremy Shay flew out to center field on the sacrifice fly to bring in Daniel Rocket.
The Woodchucks really began to crumble in the eighth inning, committing three errors in the inning, allowing two more unearned runs as the deficit ran to eight.
Bedlam broke lose in the bottom half of the eighth, as Jacob Jelmini was tossed from the game leading to a Erik Supplee ejection as the frustration began to pour out.
However, with two outs and after the ejections, fire grew in the "ËChucks eyes as they came out, and tacked on two runs off two consecutive doubles as they began to climb their way back into the game.
The bottom of the ninth began with two consecutive walks by Bombers pitcher Brian Thene, the "ËChucks put two men on with nobody out in hope of a miraculous come back victory. Immediately after the consecutive walks, Bomber's went with Brian Heldman who on his first pitch got Austin Stadler to ground into a double play.
After a walk, Heldman got Higginbotham to strike out, ending the "ËChucks win streak. The Woodchucks and Green Bay begin a two game series in Green Bay as the Woodchucks look to get back on track, still ahead in the Northwoods South.
