Alexandria Beetles News Release

Alexandria, MN - Make it four in a row for the suddenly hot Alexandria Beetles. Five Alexandria starters recorded multiple hits, Ben Moore added two more RBIs to extend his league lead with 66, Scott Sanderson picked up his second win of the summer as the Beetles (25-32, 12-10) swept the Waterloo Bucks (29-28, 10-12) with a 9-6 final in a Sunday matinee.

With the victory, Alexandria moved to within a game of first place Willmar in the second half.

The early innings of Sunday seemed a reprise of the Saturday script as first the Beetles took the lead only to watch the Bucks respond in the next half inning. Moore's one-out single scored Matt Lowenstein from second to put Alexandria in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first before Waterloo responded with a pair in the top of the second on three hits. But the damage might have been worse as Sanderson struck out Benny Roberts with runners on second and third to end the frame.

Waterloo tacked on a single run in the fourth to double their advantage but big Alexandria at-bats in the fifth and sixth provided more than enough fire-power for the Beetles to reach their longest winning streak of the season.

Alexandria batted around in the fifth as after a leadoff walk and groundout, the next six men reached for the Beetles to knock Waterloo starter Connor Cline out of the ballgame. Lowenstein's single to center scored Josh Carpenter to pull the beetles to 3-2 and after a walk to Tanner Vavra, Moore picked up another RBI with a game-tying double to left. Another walk loaded the bases for Saturday-hero Robert Case who delivered again with a two-run single to give Alexandria a lead it would never relinquish. Ryan Padilla followed with an RBI single of his own as the Beetles built a 6-3 advantage.

The lead was doubled in the sixth when seven more Beetles came to the plate and Jimmy Pickens delivered the big blow with a two-out two-RBI single.

Waterloo pulled three runs back in the eighth on back-to-back homeruns from Benny Roberts, a two-run shot, and Dan Sheppard, but closer Anthony Bazzani was perfect in the ninth to pick up his 12th save and send the Beetles streaming onto the Knute Nelson turf.

Alexandria hosts St. Cloud in the first of three, the first two at home, on Monday night at 7:05 CDT.
