Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Mequon, WI - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (7-16, 23-34 overall) lost in their final trip to Kapco Park against the Lakeshore Chinooks (12-10, 29-28 overall) once again Monday night. The Rafters fell behind early and couldn't muster much against the Chinooks, who once again did not need help from their bullpen.
Off of two straight scoreless starts, right-hander starter Jason Hoppe, who came in with a sub 2.00 era, allowed two runs in the fifth. After Brandon Downes (FR, Univ. of Virginia) lead off the innings with a double, Brandon Hohl (JR, Univ. of Illinois) roped his fifth home run of the month and eighth overall. Hohl leads the team now, passing Alex Bacon (SO, Univ. of North Florida) who has led the team the entire season.
Cole Webb (SO, Valparaiso Univ.) went just four innings against the Chinooks. The right-hander allowed three runs in a 34-pitch second inning. Webb left with a 4-0 deficit. After Lakeshore scored two off of Ronnie Muck (SO, Univ. of Illinois), Skyler Debilzen (JR, UW-La Crosse) fired three innings in relief, keeping the Chinooks quiet late. He allowed one unearned run, didn't allow a hit, and struck out four.
In a reunion with former Rafter Michael Jurgella, the Rafters got the better end. The Lakeshore DH went 0-for-3 with a walk and grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.
The Rafters only mustered one other hit off of Hoppe, a Jordan Dreiling (JR, Univ. of Kansas) lead-off single in the sixth that ended in him out on the play trying to stretch the hit to a double. Coming into the game with a .233 team average against Lakeshore, the Rafters went just 3-for-31 against the Chinooks Monday night. Hoppe finished with seven strikeouts, picking up his first complete game, and the second straight complete game effort for the Chinooks. Lakeshore finished ahead, by a final 7-2 score.
The Rafters travel to Eau Claire Tuesday to take on the improved Express for the first of a two game series. Augey Bill (2-2, 3.41 ERA) makes the start for the Rafters, looking to snap a three-game slide. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm from Carson Park.
