
BlueClaws Split Series in Greensboro

LAKEWOOD, N.J. â The Lakewood BlueClaws (5-17) fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers (12-9), Single-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins, 8-4 Friday night. The Grasshoppers used a big four run fourth inning for a split in the four game series in Greensboro, NC.
Greensboro jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Steve Gendron connected for a one out base hit, he advanced to third on Juan Figueroa's single. Gendron then scored on Brad McCann's ground ball out. The Grasshoppers broke it open in the second inning with four runs on five hits off starter Carlos Carrasco highlighted by a two-run homer from Brian Cleveland, all with two outs. Brett Carroll reached on a base hit and then Luis Allen drove him home with an RBI double. Gendron followed up with a base hit then Figueroa reached after getting hit by a pitch. McCann capped the scoring off in the inning with an RBI base hit scoring Gendron from second.
The third, fourth and fifth innings would see the Grasshoppers and BlueClaws exchange three runs a piece and after six innings Greensboro led 8-3. Lakewood cut the lead in half in the seventh inning when Jayson Drobiak reached on a fielder's choice scoring Chris Klemm from third and the score stood at 8-4.
Carrasco (L, 0-3) allowed seven runs on eleven hits while walking one and striking out four over the course of 4 1/3 innings. Greg Golson and Sam Orr both finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Craig Moldrem (W, 2-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out two.
The BlueClaws return home Saturday night for an eight game home stand beginning with four games against the Asheville Tourists, the Single-A team of the Colorado Rockies. Lakewood will send left-hander Derek Griffith (1-1, 2.31 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by the right-hander Juan Morillo (0-3, 6.35 ERA) of Asheville. On air time is 6:50 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on 1310 WADB AM.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions this year, kids eat free every Monday Night courtesy of ShopRite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against affiliates of the New York Yankees and Mets.
