Rome Emperors News Release
Rome GA- The Rome Braves fell to the Savannah Sand Gnats 10-7 Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium in front of 2,789 fans. It was Rome's fourth loss in a row.
The Sand Gnats wasted no time getting things started by posting two runs in the first inning thanks to two walks and two hit batters. Rome cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning as JC Holt doubled and later scored on Van Pope's single.
The Sand Gnats broke the game open in the second inning by sending eleven batters to the plate. The inning started with four consecutive walks by Braves starter Charlie Morton. A Rome pitching change brought in Johnny Wiggins and he was rudely greeted by an Edgardo Baez grand slam making the score 7-1. Rome added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Clint Sammons but Savannah got the run right back in the fifth on an RBI double by Reggie Fitzpatrick to give the Sand Gnats the lead 8-2.
Rome mounted a comeback scoring five runs over the next five innings but Savannah held on for the victory 10-7. The winning pitcher was Jim Henderson (1-1) and the loser was Charlie Morton (0-2). Rome concludes the home stand tomorrow night at seven against Savannah. For tickets call the Braves Ticket Hotline at 706-378-5144.
