Columbus Catfish News Release

COLUMBUS, GA - 3B Blake DeWitt hit a two-run HR in the bottom of the first inning and the Catfish never trailed in a 9-2 victory over the Greenville Bombers at Golden Park. DeWitt has hits in five of his last six AB after breaking an 0-14 slump last night. The Catfish 9-2 win tonight coupled with a win last night gives them their first back-to-back wins in 2005. RHP Chris Malone earned his first professional win with 2.1 innings of relief, as the Catfish took the final two games of the four-game set with Greenville to improve to 7-14 on the season.

DeWitt¹s homer came with one out in the first inning against Greenville starter Kyle Jackson with CF Jamie Hoffmann on base. Leading 2-0 in the third, LF Sam Steidl drew a bases loaded walk against reliever Yader Peralta of Greenville giving the Fish a 3-0 advantage. The Catfish poured it on the fifth, when new Catfish RF Ryan Russ capped a three-run inning with a two-run single. The Catfish also struck for three in the sixth frame. DeWitt drove him his third run of the game with a hard hit smash to center, and 1B Dan Batz drove home a run later with a single to right. Batz finished the game 3-4 with a double and DeWitt ended up 4-5 with a HR and 3 RBI.

The lone black mark on the victory for the Catfish came in the fifth inning, when RHP Jesus Castillo left the game with an injury. Castillo was dominant again tonight, allowing no runs on just two hits in 4.2 IP, striking out five. Malone finished the fifth and tossed two more innings for the win. RHP Phil Sobkow and RHP Wesley Wright each threw a scoreless inning in relief.

The Catfish open up a five-game series on the road tomorrow when they take on the Savannah Sand Gnats at Grayson Stadium starting a 7:05. The game can be heard live on 1460 WHAL with the pregame show beginning at 6:50. RHP Brandon Weeden (1-1, 4.00 ERA) takes the ball for Columbus on the mound.
