Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio - The BlueClaws rallied to force extra innings, before Dominic Brown singled in the go- ahead run in the 11th to help Lakewood a critical 8-6 victory over Lake County at Classic Park on Thursday afternoon.
With one away, Brown singled off of Dallas Cawiezell to score T.J. Warren from second base to give the BlueClaws a 5-4 lead. Michael Taylor followed with a three-run home run, his eighth of the year, to blow the game wide open.
Lakewood managed four straight hits against Cawiezell (2-2), including back-to-back-to-back singles from Warren, Derrick Mitchell and Brown.
The BlueClaws needed a late rally to even have the chance at extra innings. Lakewood (29-25) scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, 4-4. Warren was again prominently involved, driving in pinch hitter Herman Demmink from second base against Captains closer Vinnie Pestano.
The BlueClaws took a 3-0 lead in support of starter Drew Naylor in the third inning thanks to a Mitchell home run off of Captains starter Joey Mahalic. It was Mitchell's seventh home run of the season and one of a pair of extra-base hits by the BlueClaws second baseman in the game.
Naylor returned to form in the start, striking out seven in four innings of work. The BlueClaws ace did not factor in the decision, departing with the score tied, 3- 3.
Lake County scored what could have been the winning run in the eighth against Lakewood reliever Zach Sterner. Adam White doubled over the head of centerfielder D'Arby Myers to score Doug Pickens and make it a 4-3 Lake County advantage.
The Captains did not go down quietly in the bottom of the 11th, despite trailing by four entering the frame. Lake County put the first three hitters on against Jared Simon, scoring two runs. Simon (5-1) managed to get the final three hitters in a row to end the game.
The win was the 10th for Lakewood in their last 12 games and cut the Captains lead in the Northern Division race to five games.
The BlueClaws will go for their second straight win against their Northern Division rivals on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Jacob Diekman (1-3) will take the mound for BlueClaws looking for his second straight win.
