Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hagerstown, Md.- Delmarva took the field on Thursday knowing that a victory would inch them a game closer to first place. Trailing 4-2 heading to the seventh, things look bleak. But the Shorebirds battled back, scoring two in the eighth to send the game into extras and three in the tenth to earn the win on a gorgeous evening in Hagerstown. After the Suns scored three runs early in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead, the Shorebird bullpen shined down the stretch. Cliff Flagello and Mick Mattaliano combined for four and two-thirds hitless, shutout innings in relief to provide Delmarva with the foundation for the comeback.
After pounding four singles in game one of the series, Tyler Henson cracked two more singles and a double in tonight's contest, including RBI base knocks in both the eighth and the tenth. Matt Angle and Wally Crancer each recorded identical monster nights. They both contributed a single, a double, and two runs batted in apiece to pave the way for the victory. After Henson put the Shorebirds on top 5-4 with a bloop single to center field in the tenth inning, Crancer drilled a double down the right field line, bringing two insurance runs across the plate.
Shorebird right-fielder Joe Nowicki was 0-3 with a walk when the game was sent into the tenth, but used his extra at-bat to extend his hitting streak to twelve games. An infield single to the deep whole at short put two on with nobody out and set the stage for the other Shorebird sluggers to win the game.
Starting pitcher Cole McCurry allowed four runs on seven hits in five and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one. Three of the four runs against the southpaw came in the sixth. Flagello replaced McCurry, retired the first nine batters he faced, and did not allow a hit in his longest outing of the season.
With the win, the Shorebirds are now just 4.5 games behind first-place Captains. Delmarva will face Lake County six more times in the first half. A three-game series at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium will kick off Monday, June 5.
