Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (27-26) and the Delmarva Shorebirds (29-24) battled back and forth on Thursday night but the Suns came up short and gave up the go ahead runs in the top of the tenth inning at Municipal Stadium.
The Suns powered their way on the board in the bottom of the second as Trevor Lawhorn smashed a solo shot, his second on the year, to left field to score the games first run.
Delmarva bounced back and connected with four straight singles. The Shorebirds scored two on a single by Matt Angle to take a 2-1 lead.
Suns starter Jeff Mandel did not let another run cross the plate as he tossed five innings with six strike outs and gave up two runs on the night.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Suns top of the order came alive with a lead-off single by Boomer Whiting, a walk by Dan Lyons, and a RBI single by Bill Rhinehart to score Whiting. Aaron Seuss and Stephen King followed with RBI singles to give the Suns the lead at 4-2
After Chris Lugo took over for Mandel in the sixth, Lugo struggled in the seventh as he gave up two Shorebird runs in the top of the eight inning. RBI singles by Joe Mahoney and Tyler Henson tied the game up at four a piece.
The Suns went quietly in their half of the seventh, eight, and ninth inning and the game moved to extras.
The Shorebirds struck in the top of the tenth off of reliever Erik Arnesen (4-1) and scored three clutch runs, two earned. Tyler Henson crunched the fatal blow to the Suns with a single to score Ryan Adams who reached on a fielding error. Wally Crancer then doubled to add two RBIs to finish off Hagerstown.
Cliff Flagello and Mick Mattaliano (2-0) shut down the Suns bats as they combined to pitch four and two thirds innings of no hit baseball.
