Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON- Charleston RiverDogs starting pitcher Zach McAllister has been promoted to the High Class-A Tampa Yankees, the New York Yankees announced Thursday. Outfielder Abraham Almonte has also been activated from the disabled list to keep the RiverDogs at 25 players.

McAllister marks the first RiverDog to be promoted in the 2008 season. The last Charleston player to move up a level was shortstop Eduardo Nunez, who was promoted to Tampa on July 30, 2007.

The 6'6", 230 lb. right-hander was enjoying a phenomenal first season in the South Atlantic League (SAL), posting a team-best 6-3 record with a 2.45 ERA. In 62.1 innings of work, the Chillicothe, Ill. native surrendered 28 runs (17 earned), while allowing just eight walks and striking out 53 batters.

Almonte, who has missed the last 18 games with a lower-body injury, will assume his usual spot in centerfield and hit lead off for Charleston in Thursday's homestand lid-lifter against the Hickory Crawdads.

Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2005, Almonte quickly became one of the most versatile leadoff hitters in the SAL, hitting .280 in 34 games with four home runs, 25 RBI, 21 runs scored, and a team-high 11 stolen bases. The Dominican native has registered four hits in a game twice this season, and tied a team high by clobbering two home runs in a single contest on April 20 in an 11-7 Charleston victory against the Columbus Catfish at Golden Park.
