Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD - On Friday, June 6th, the Hagerstown Suns will honor local World War II veterans before the game against the Lake County Captains. June 6th is the 64th anniversary of "D-Day" - the day the United States landed in France in an effort to stop Germany's fortification of Eastern Europe during World War II.
On Thursday, April 10th, a group of approximately 40 WWII veterans from Hagerstown visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. It was a trip organized in part by Hagerstown City Council member Lewis C. Metzner. Twenty-two of those veterans will be at Municipal Stadium on June 6th to be honored on the field before the Suns game.
All area WWII veterans are encouraged to contact the Suns if they would also like to be a part of this ceremony. The Suns are offering tickets to any World War II veterans wishing to participate in the on-field ceremony.
"We hope to honor as many World War II veterans as we can find. Please spread the word throughout the community," said Suns' general manager Will Smith. "My grandfather is a living World War II veteran. He thinks he didn't do anything special. He simply did the job his country asked him to do. They all deserve our utmost respect and appreciation."
Please contact the Suns by calling 301-791-6266 if you, a family member or friend is a veteran of World War II and would like to participate on June 6th.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Ticket packages and sponsorships are available by calling the Suns at 301-791-6266. Visit the Suns on the web at www.hagerstownsuns.com. The Suns are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties.
