Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (20-33) fell in extra innings to the Greenville Drive (28-26) after a 7-5 loss to extend the Catfish losing streak to 7 games.
The teams traded zeros until the bottom of the 3rd when the Catfish scored 3 runs without hitting the ball out of the infield. Stephen Vogt led off with an infield single and then stole second base. Seth Dhaenens than laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move him to 3rd. Omar Luna than hit a ground ball to third basemen Manny Arambarris, who threw it over the head of first basemen Michael Jones and this allowed Vogt to score and Luna to move to second base. Luna then stole 3rd and Jackson Brennan walked. Eammon Portice then threw the ball away on the fake to third throw to first pick-off, which allowed Luna to score and Brennan to go to 2nd base. Maiko Loyola then drove in Brennan when Michael Jones mishandled the throw from Yamaico Navarro on a routine ground ball.
The strangeness of the game would not stop there. In the top of the 6th, Arambarris led off with a double, Che-Hsuan Lin walked and Ryan Kalish singled to load the bases. Navarro then roped a ball down the right field line that right fielder Jackson Brennan was unable to catch after laying out. This allowed Arambarris and Lin to score and there was a play at the plate on Kalish. Kalish played linebacker to Mike McCormick's running back and laid him out, resulting in McCormick dropping the ball. Navarro saw this and then raced home to make it a 4-3 game. Columbus answered in the bottom of the 6th when Reid Fronk's ground out scored Shawn O'Malley.
In the 8th, Jones hit a home run for Greenville around the right field foul pole to give them a 1-run lead, but Columbus answered in the bottom half when Greg Sexton his a sacrifice fly to Jered Stanley to score Shawn O'Malley. Columbus would then leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and the game went to the 10th inning.
In the 10th, Greenville scored two when an O'Malley error allowed Kalish to score and then an Oscar Tejeda sacrifice fly drove in Jones. Columbus would go down easily in the bottom of the 10th to extend the losing streak to 7 games.
The Drive were led by Ryan Kalish (3-5 with 2 runs and a double), Yamaico Navarro (2-5 with a run and a triple) and Michael Jones (2-3 with 2 runs, a home run and a run batted in with 2 walks). Eammon Portice allowed only 2 hits in 6 innings but allowed 4 runs and 1 earned run while striking out 5. Felix Ventura picked up his first win of the year and Jordan Craft recorded his 1st save.
The Catfish were led by Shawn O'Malley, who went 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Kevin Boggan picked up his 3rd loss after throwing 2 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs and 0 earned runs.
The Catfish return to action tomorrow against Greenville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
The Catfish are the Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.
