Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The BlueClaws bats went quite on a beautiful Friday night, as Zach Britton and two Delmarva relievers held the BlueClaws to three hits in a 3-1 Delmarva victory at Purdue Stadium.
The BlueClaws went hitless for the final six innings and managed just two baserunners over that stretch. Michael Taylors two-out base hit in the third inning was the last hit the BlueClaws would manage.
Jacob Diekman settled down after giving up a run in the first inning, lasting six innings while giving up four hits and just the one earned run. After control troubles his first start of the season, the 21-year old southpaw walked three and struck out four.
Delmarva broke open a 1-1 game with a pair of runs against Ben Pfinsgraff in the bottom of the seventh. Pfinsgraff, who joined the team from extended spring training just hours before Friday's first pitch, gave up back-to-back ground-rule doubles to start the inning. Ryan Adams led off the frame with a double before Wally Crancer hit a double of his own to score the decisive run.
The Shorebirds (3-4) got some insurance when Pfinsgraff (0-1) threw away a groundball hit by Matt Angle. The error on the BlueClaws right-hander allowed Crancer to score from second.
Delmarva staked an early 1-0 lead against Diekman, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Angle. Tyler Henson singled Angle to third and Anthony Martinez got the scoring going with a sacrifice fly.
The BlueClaws (3-5) did not need long to respond, knotting the game in the top of the third. D'Arby Myers led off the inning with a double and groudouts by Dominic Brown and Derrick Mitchell helped him the rest of the way.
The brief third inning offensive outburst was the last semblance of offense the BlueClaws would see the rest of the way. Lakewood had just two more baserunners after the third inning thanks to walks to Brown and Mike Durant.
Brian Barker (2-0) took the win in relief, while Nick Mattaliano earned his third save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The same two teams will square off again on Saturday night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. After three relief appearances, Chance Chapman (0-0, 6.00) will make his first start of the year for the BlueClaws, while Luis Noel (0-0, 4.50) will take the mound for the Shorebirds.
