Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - Alex McRae and two relievers combined to throw a six-hit shutout as West Virginia blanked the BlueClaws 4-0 on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Park as the Power have now taken the first three games in the four-game set from Lakewood.
The BlueClaws (19-16/52-51) have now dropped five straight games to fall a second-half high six games in back of first place West Virginia (25-10/62-42).
The Power got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Elvis Escobar and they added a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Jerrick Suiter to go up 2-0. Lakewood starter Shane Watson came out after six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts, while falling to 1-3.
Scott Harris came on in the seventh and gave up an RBI triple to Escobar to drive home Taylor Gushue, who also tripled. Jordan Luplow's SAC fly made it 4-0 in the seventh.
West Virginia starter Alex McRae, who improved to 5-7, came out after six scoreless innings and he has now thrown 12 scoreless innings over two games against the BlueClaws this year.
The BlueClaws threatened in the fifth with the game still scoreless. Lakewood had runners and 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Jiandido Tromp hit a laser to 3rd base off the mit of the third baseman Jordan Luplow. The ball glanced to the shortstop Tyler Filliben who threw Tromp out at first. Chase Harris followed with a fly ball to center on which Damek Tomscha was thrown out by Escobar trying to score what would have been the game's first run.
In the eighth inning, trailing 4-0, Cord Sandberg was robbed of a run-scoring hit by a diving first baseman Connor Joe, which ended the inning and a Lakewood threat.
Escobar and Suiter each had three hits for the Power while Emmanuel Marrero had two of the six hits for the BlueClaws.
The series with West Virginia concludes on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm. RHP Will Morris (3-0) starts for Lakewood against RHP Colten Brewer (3-8).
