Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Texas Rangers, MLB parent club of the Hickory Crawdads, have acquired major league RHP Sam Dyson in a trade with the Miami Marlins in exchange for former 'Dads Tom Telis and Cody Ege.
Telis, 24, hit .297 with 11 home runs, 28 doubles, and 69 RBI for the Crawdads in 2011 en route to being named a South Atlantic League All-Star and helping to lead the club to a first half Northern Division title. The Venezuela native was also named an All-Star in 2013 & 2014 with Double-A Frisco as well as in 2015 in Triple-A Round Rock. Telis made his major league debut with the Rangers in 2014 and also appeared in six games with the big league club in 2015, with the switch-hitting catcher hitting a combined .241 with 2 2B and 10 RBI over 24 games.
Ege, 24, went 3-0 with a 0.42 ERA (1 ER/21.2 IP), and 29 strikeouts over 10 games out of the bullpen with the Crawdads in 2013. A 15th round selection by the Rangers in the 2013 Draft out of Louisville, Ege spent all of 2014 with Class-A Advanced Mrytle Beach and began the 2015 season at the same level in High Desert before earning a promotion to Double-A Frisco in May where he went 3-2 with a 0.85 ERA and 37 Ks over 31.2 innings pitched.
Dyson, 27, has gone 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA (18 ER/44.0 IP) in 44 relief appearances for the Marlins this season, already establishing major league career highs in games and innings pitched. He has been in the Miami bullpen the entire season. Dyson has a career 6-6 record and 3.87 ERA over 82 games/one start in the majors with Toronto (2012) and Miami (2013-15). He had a 2.14 ERA (10 ER/42.0 IP) over 31 appearances for the Marlins in 2014. He was originally selected by Toronto in the 4th round of the 2010 June draft and was sent to Miami on a waiver claim in January 2013. Dyson is a Tampa-area native and pitched at the University of South Carolina.
The move marks the second trade deadline deal by the Rangers in which multiple former Crawdads were involved, joining the club's acquisition of Philadelphia Phillies ace LHP Cole Hamels in exchange for a package of players including former Hickory stars Jorge Alfaro, Nick Williams, and Jerad Eickhoff.
