Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds rallied late on Saturday night, but the Charleston RiverDogs hung on to a 4-3 final score. Delmarva (20-15, 53-50) came up just short with three runs in the eighth, unable to complete the comeback in front of 7,842 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Dariel Delgado pitched very well in the start for Delmarva, making one mistake in six innings. In the fourth, Bo Thompson lifted a solo home run for a 1-0 Charleston lead. Delgado scattered three singles otherwise, and his six innings pitched matched a career-high.
The RiverDogs scored three crucial insurance runs that gave Charleston enough cushion to withstand a late rally. A fielding error gave Charleston an extra out in the seventh, and Isaias Tejeda came home on a throwing miscue. With two outs, Vince Conde fought off an inside pitch for a two-run double on a jamshot that fell in no man's land down the right field line.
Down 4-0, Delmarva finally got the offense going in the eighth inning. Cam Kneeland led off the frame with a double, tying Conor Bierfeldt for the most this season with Delmarva. With two outs, the Shorebirds strung together four consecutive singles. Elier Leyva, T.J. Olesczuk and Ademar Rifaela collected RBIs during the two-out rally. Delmarva left the tying run on second base when Guillermo Salas struck out, batting for Steve Wilkerson who had previously exited the game after being hit by a pitch.
Sean Carley earned the win for Charleston, tossing three scoreless innings in relief. Starter Rony Bautista pitched four scoreless, though Delmarva failed to capitalize on Bautista's five walks. Angel Rincon earned his third save for Charleston, while Delgado suffered a tough loss for Delmarva. Derek Peterson went 3-for-4 in the Shorebirds' losing effort.
The defeat snaps a four-gamw winning streak for Delmarva, though the Shorebirds still have a chance for five straight home series wins to start the second half. Delmarva is currently in second place in the Northern Division standings behind the West Virginia Power.
The Shorebirds will try to finish off a series win in Sunday's finale. Right-hander Josh Walker (6-2, 3.35) will start for Delmarva opposite right-hander Jordan Foley (3-4, 3.14) for Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
