EASTLAKE, OH-Three first-inning runs boosted Lake County, who coupled the early offense with six shutout innings from Carlton Smith into a 4-0 win over Lakewood on Wednesday night.

The BlueClaws (12-7) fall to 2-2 on a six-game road trip while Lake County (11-8) snaps a five-game losing streak.

Smith (6-6) allowed just five hits without a walk over his six innings. Each of the five hits came in different innings and Smith induced double-play ground-outs twice after lead-off singles. No BlueClaws player reached 2nd until the 8th inning.

The Captians three-run first came on four hits including a lead-off double off of Sergio Escalona by Adam Davis. The other three hits were singles and none left the infield. Lake County scored on a SAC fly by Beau Mills, a bases-loaded walk to Carlos Rivero, and an RBI single by Roman Pena.

Escalona (0-2) did throw four shutout innings afterwards but left after allowing eight hits and three walks.

Lakewood brought the tying run to the on-deck circle in the 9th but Carl Henry Jr. grounded out to end the game. It was the 2nd time Lakewood was blanked this year.

The series continues Thursday at 11:05 a.m. from Classic Park. RHP Darren Byrd (4-6, 4.08) goes for Lakewood against RHP Josh Tomlin (7-1, 3.17). You can hear the game on the Shore Sports Network (1160 WOBM-AM and 1310 WADB) beginning at 10:50.
