Lexington Legends News Release
Despite their position in the cellar of the South Atlantic League Northern Division, the Greensboro Grasshoppers have had their way with Lexington this season, compiling a 5-2 record against the Legends. That trend continued on Wednesday night at Applebee's Park, as Lexington fell 14-2. Greensboro improved its second-half road record to 2-10, and every offensive player for the Grasshoppers (including pinch hitters and pinch runners) reached base at least once.
Doug Arguello started and pitched a 1-2-3 first inning. The trouble began, however, in the second. The first five batters of the inning reached against him, and all of them scored giving the Hoppers the early 5-0 cushion. They added two more in the third, prompting manager Gregg Langbehn to give Arguello (6-6) the early hook. Corey Bass fared better in relief, allowing one run in his three innings of work while netting four strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Lexington couldn't muster any offense against 160-pound right-hander Cristhian Martinez. He went six shutout innings, allowing one hit and four walks. He struck out five. Rodolfo Encarnacion entered for Martinez (3-2) in the seventh, and while throwing at speeds in the mid-90s on the stadium radar gun along with a nasty curve, Lexington was able to get to him for its first runs of the evening. The Legends pushed two across in the eighth (one earned) and the team tallied its first hits since the third inning.
In the ninth, Greensboro piled onto its already large lead. Up 9-2, they managed to add another five-spot when Kyle DeYoung walked three and gave up a pair of hits while the Hoppers batted around. The big blow was a bases-clearing double by Jake Blackwood that might have been a triple in a closer contest. With the score 14-2, Blackwood stopped at second.
Lexington will attempt to rebound tomorrow evening starting at 7:05 p.m. Casey Hudspeth (5-5, 5.01) draws Jarrett Santos (0-1, 3.38) on Win a Grounds Crew Night.
