ROCKS LOCKDOWN KEYS:The Blue Rocks recent dominance of the Frederick Keys continued on Saturday as the Blue Crew swept a doubleheader from its division rival at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks won game one, 3-1, and took the nightcap, 5-0. For the season, Wilmington has now taken seven of 11 from the Keys, including five victories in the teams' past six encounters.
DOUBLE-D:Danny Duffy (7-3) tossed a masterpiece in the opener, allowing only a single unearned run on two hits over seven innings for his first career complete game. He retired the last 14 batters he faced. Derrick Robinsonopened the bottom of the first with a bunt single and moved into scoring position by stealing second. Johnny Giavotellafollowed with a walk. Two batters later, Clint Robinsondrew a free pass to load the bases for Paulo Orlandowho got an RBI the hard way, as he was hit by a pitch to bring home Derrick Robinson. After Frederick answered with a score in the top of the third to tie the game, Wilmington put it away in the home fourth. Chase Fontaineled off the inning with his first home run in a Blue Rocks uniform, and Orlando added an RBIgroundout.
BROOM CREW:In game two, the Rocks hung a pair on the Keys in the opening inning thanks to a Derrick Robinson single and steal, a Mike Moustakaswalk, a Clint Robinson RBI single, and a run-scoring double by Orlando. In the third, the Blue Crew added three more tallies largely thanks to Frederick right fielder Billy Rowell. The South Jersey native misplayed a fly balls that allowed Giavotella to reach safely. After Clint Robinson and Orlando added singles, and JamarWalton hit into an RBI fielder's choice, Rowell made his second, and most costly mistake, misplaying a fly ball from Anthony Seratelliinto a two-run triple. That was more than enough offense for starter Alex Caldera (3-7), who tossed six scoreless innings, yielding only four hits, and walking just one. Chris Chavez did not surrender a run in the seventh to preserve the Rocks' 10th shutout of 2009.
UP & DOWN:Wilmington failed to manage a single hit in 11 tries with men at second and/or third in the opener, but went 4-for-9 in the nightcap. Over its last six games, Wilmington is 10-for-54 with runners in scoring position.
HOT ROCKS:Anthony Seratelli's big hit in game two was his only knock of the night. The shortstop has hits in 13 of his last 15 contests. Derrick Robinsonstole three bases in the doubleheader. Each theft he recorded eventually resulted in a run scored by the center fielder. Since losing five consecutive starts, Alex Calderais now 2-0 with a 2.50 ERAover his last three outings. After losing 11 of 14 at Frawley, the Rocks have won their last three homes games, outscoring foes 10-2.
MOOSE TRACKS:Despite the wins, Mike Moustakascontinues to struggle at the plate. The Rocks' third baseman is 0-for-18 over his last five games, lowering his batting average to .254, his worst mark since April 17.
