Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg scored five unearned runs off Salem starter Kyle Weiland en route to a 10-3 victory over the Red Sox at City Stadium Sunday night. The Hillcats salvaged a win in the three-game series and will return to action on Tuesday night against Potomac. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Salem grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the first. After Cats starter Justin Wilson retired the first two batters he faced, Daniel Nava reached on a walk and Wilson plunked Yamaico Navarro. Anthony Rizzo delivered an RBI single that scored Nava and put the Red Sox in front 1-0.
The Red Sox kept the 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the fourth. Kent Sakamoto reached on a fielding error by Salem shortstop Kris Negron and advanced to second on a passed ball. Keel roped an RBI double to left field that plated Sakamoto. After Weiland struck out Erik Huber, Eric Fryer knocked in Keel with an RBI single that gave Lynchburg a 2-1 edge.
Lynchburg tacked on four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Presley laced a one-out double to left-center field and Jordy Mercer reached on a throwing error by Zach Borowiak. Presley took third on Matt Hague's fly out to Nava in right field. Following a walk to Sakamoto, Weiland was lifted for Dave McKae, who promptly issued a bases-load walk to Keel, which enabled Presley to score.
Huber cleared the bases with a three-run double that gave the Cats a commanding 6-1 advantage.
Lynchburg added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Presley singled off McKae and advanced to second when Mercer walked. McKae surrendered consecutive RBI singles to Hague and Sakamoto to make it an 8-1 Lynchburg lead.
Cats reliever Ramon Aguero replaced Wilson in the seventh and gave up two hits and two runs, which reduced the lead to 8-3. But the Hillcats scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, including another unearned run, to seal the 10-3 victory.
Wilson (4-6) pitched a career-high six innings and allowed just three hits and one run to earn the win. Weiland (3-7) was charged with the loss despite the fact that he did not allow an earned run in 4 2/3 innings of work. Six of the 10 Lynchburg runs were unearned as Salem committed four errors.
The Hillcats will begin a three-game series with Potomac on Tuesday night following an off day on Monday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Calvin Falwell Field.
Tune in to FM 105.5 KD Country, 96.9 FM Roanoke or online at www.kdcountry.com or www.lynchburg-hillcats.com for all the live action beginning at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.
