Game #91/Home #43

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals will look to cap off their most successful homestand of the 2009 season when they host the Kinston Indians and an afternoon tilt from Pfitzner Stadium with first scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The P-Nats are 5-1 on this current homestand and have won eight of their last 10 home games since the start of the second half. With their exciting 2-1 victory Saturday night, the Nationals won their third straight home series for the first time during the 2009 campaign. This new found success in their home ballpark is outstanding considering the P-Nats were 0-6-1 in their previous seven home series.

TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Eric Berger, 23, was the 8th round selection of the Cleveland Indians in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona. Born just 30 minutes away from Kinston in nearby Goldsboro, NC, Burger is another local product residing on the K-Tribe roster. Since his father was in the military, Berger moved west when he was only two years of age and later attended Woodcreek High School in Roseville, CA. The lefty spent his first professional season between SS-A Mahoning Valley and Low-A Lake County and tallied very impressive numbers including a 2-0 record with a 2.11 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts). He was named to New York-Penn League regular season All-Star team after striking out 41 batters and walking just nine in 34.0 innings for the MV Scrappers.

This season, the former Wildcat is first in the Carolina League in ERA among active pitchers with a 2.35 in 95.2 IP. Berger also ranks 4th in the CL with 81 strikeouts trailing Danny Duffy of Wilmington, Zach Britton of Frederick and leader Eammon Portice of the Salem Red Sox. In his only start against Potomac this season, Berger tossed 5.2 of scoreless baseball on May 19 and struck out five but the P-Nats went on to win the game 4-3 from Historic Grainger Stadium.
