Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Dunedin erupted for four runs in the top of the first and never looked back, as the Blue Jays defeated the Daytona Tortugas, 12-4, in front of 2,476 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night.
With one out in the top of the game's opening frame, SS Kevin Vicuña (3-5, 2 R, RBI, SO) and CF Chavez Young (1-5, R, SO) ripped consecutive singles. Following a line out, 1B Kacy Clemens (1-3, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, BB, 2 SO) smashed a deep drive to center. The ball sailed between the fence and the batter's eye for a three-run home run - Clemens' second of the year - to put Dunedin (6-4, 47-26) ahead, 3-0. C Chris Bec (1-3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB) then walked, advanced to second on a balk, and scored on a single to left from RF Ryan Noda (3-5, 2 RBI, SO), advancing the Blue Jays advantage to four.
The D-Jays would strike again in the fifth. With one on and two out, DH Demi Orimoloye (2-4, 3 R, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, BB) clobbered an offering well over the fence in left for a two-run bomb. The slugger's fifth long ball extended Dunedin's edge to 6-0. Two batters later, Bec would uncork an RBI double to nudge the Jays up by seven.
Thanks to 3B Alejo López (1-4, 3 RBI, BB, SO), Daytona (5-6, 40-36) finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning. C Mark Kolozsvary (1-1, R, RBI, 2 BB) and CF Andy Sugilio (1-4, 2 R) reached base via a walk and single, respectively. Advancing to second and third on a grounder, López drove the duo in with a two-out single to center. The knock trimmed the 'Tugas deficit to five, 7-2. One frame later, Kolozsvary produced a run-scoring single - driving in DH Hendrik Clementina (1-3, R, 2B, SO) - to draw Daytona within four, 7-3.
That was as close as the game would get, as the Jays put up tallies in each of the last three innings. During the seventh, Orimoloye tripled home a runner and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clemens. Dunedin made it a 10-2 contest in the eighth on a base-hit to right-center from Vicuña. Noda added another RBI single in the ninth, while the Blue Jays last run crossed on a fielder's choice.
Daytona accumulated one last run in the bottom of the ninth on a ground out to second by López.
LHP Nick Allgeyer (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) struggled late in his outing but worked through five to snatch his sixth victory. Daytona's RHP Wendolyn Bautista (5.0 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) gutted through five frames, however, took his third defeat.
LHP Wennington Romero (1-1, 3.26 ERA) will try and stop the two-game skid for Daytona, as he is expected to get the ball on Saturday. Dunedin is scheduled to counter with RHP Josh Winckowski (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:50 p.m. ET, leading up to the 7:05 p.m. ET start at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Saturday evening's game can be heard on www.daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Daytona's Copa de la Diversión Weekend continues with a Shell-tastic Saturday. In conjunction with the Volusia County Hispanic Chamber, the Tortugas will host the Biggest Festival in Central Florida at Jackie Robinson Ballpark featuring live music, food trucks, kids activities, and much more from 12 until 5 p.m. Admission to the event is free. Gates will re-open to the park at 5:30 p.m. and those in the crowd that evening will be able to enjoy one more spectacular Postgame Fireworks show.
