Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers struggled to find offense all game on Friday night, but still found a way to come away with a 3-1 victory over the St. Lucie Mets at First Data Field to start out the three-game series.
All three of the visitors' runs crossed in the ninth and 10th frames, as the offense stranded seven men on base through the first eight innings.
Clearwater (44-33, 8-3) took advantage of a St. Lucie (40-37, 8-3) miscue in the ninth to tie the game at one apiece. Rodolfo Duran reached on a single with one out, and stayed at first after Luke Miller went down on strikes. Daniel Brito bounced a 2-2 pitch to the left side of the infield, and a diving play by Manny Rodriguez kept the ball on the infield.
The throw by the shortstop sailed wide of second on the force play, and rolled all the way into the Threshers bullpen down the right field line. Duran hustled all the way home to tie the game, while Brito ended up at third on the play.
Dalton Guthrie started the 10th on second base, and advanced to third on an errant throw from Nick Meyer down to second. Matt Vierling popped out to shallow center for the first out, prompting an intentional walk to Simon Muzziotti.
Jhailyn Ortiz struck out on three pitches, but Nick Maton kept the inning alive to load the bases for Madison Stokes. For the second night in a row, the Threshers uses a two-out, bases loaded single to score two runs in an extra inning to pull away, as Stokes sent the first pitch of his at-bat into shallow center to push across Guthrie and Muzziotti for the 3-1 lead.
Zach Warren (SV, 3) earned the save by stranding two men on base in the bottom of the final stanza. Oscar Marcelino (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Ethan Evanko did not factor into the decision, despite a quality start. The lone damage against the southpaw came in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Cody Bohaneck to put Clearwater behind, 1-0.
The Grand Canyon University product lasted seven frames in the no-decision, allowing the lone run on five hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
Clearwater goes for the series victory in game two of the three-game set against the St. Lucie Mets at First Data Field on Saturday night. RHP Kyle Glogoski (1-0, 0.00) makes his first start since the combined no-hitter on June 22 for the Threshers against the Mets' RHP Dedniel Nunez (1-2, 4.12). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:15 p.m. with Threshers Live! The Pre-game show on threshersbaseball.com.
