
BLUE JACKETS ASSIGN DEFENSEMAN GABRIEL CARLSSON TO MONSTERS

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, announced Sunday that the Blue Jackets recalled defenseman Gabriel Carlsson, goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, and left wing Sonny Milano from their loans to the Monsters. Columbus also assigned Carlsson back to Cleveland on Sunday, and assigned goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks to the Monsters as well.
Originally selected by the Blue Jackets in the first round (29th overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Carlsson, 20, posted 0-1-1 with two penalty minutes and a -1 rating in eight appearances for Columbus this season. In nine career NHL appearances for the Blue Jackets spanning the past two seasons, Carlsson has 0-2-2 to his credit with two penalty minutes and a +2 rating. In four AHL appearances for the Monsters spanning each of the past two seasons, Carlsson supplied 0-1-1 with two penalty minutes and a +3 rating. In parts of three SHL seasons with Link ö ping HC from 2014-17, Carlsson registered 3-12-15 with eight penalty minutes and a +15 rating in 92 appearances. In international play, Carlsson, a 6'5", 192 lb., left-handed native of Orebro, Sweden, represented his native country in the 2016 and 2017 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships.
A 6'3", 182 lb. native of Pori, Finland, Korpisalo, 23, logged a 1-3-0 record with a 3.28 goals-against average (GAA) and a .896 save percentage (SV%) in four appearances for the Blue Jackets this season. In 49 career NHL appearances spanning the past three seasons for Columbus, Korpisalo posted a 24-19-5 record with a 2.73 GAA and a .914 SV%. In 38 career AHL appearances for the Monsters and Springfield Falcons spanning parts of five seasons from 2014-17, Korpisalo registered a 16-16-5 record with a 2.53 GAA and a .910 SV% and helped the Monsters claim the 2016 Calder Cup as AHL Playoff Champions. Originally selected by the Blue Jackets in the third round (62nd overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Korpisalo additionally logged time with Liiga's Jokerit and Ilves during parts of three professional seasons in Finland and represented his home country in the 2013 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships and the 2017 IIHF World Championships.
Milano, a 6'1", 195 lb., left-handed native of Massapequa, NY, was originally selected by Columbus in the first round (16th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and supplied 5-3-8 with four penalty minutes and a +1 rating in 17 appearances for the Blue Jackets this season. In 23 NHL appearances for Columbus spanning the past three seasons, Milano registered 5-4-9 with four penalty minutes and a -1 rating. In 128 AHL games played for Springfield and the Monsters spanning four seasons from 2014-17, Milano tallied 32-51-83 with 46 penalty minutes and a +1 rating. During the 2016 AHL Playoffs, Milano racked up 4-4-8 with four penalty minutes and a +6 rating in 17 appearances, helping the Monsters claim the Calder Cup. Prior to his professional career, Milano posted 22-46-68 with 24 penalty minutes and a -17 rating in 50 OHL appearances for the Plymouth Whalers in 2014-15 and logged 24-37-61 with 33 penalty minutes and a -6 rating in 63 USHL appearances for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program from 2012-14. In international play, Milano represented Team USA in the 2015 and 2016 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships, helping the Americans claim the tournament's Bronze Medal in 2016.
A 6'3", 184 lb. native of Riga, Lativia, Kivlenieks, 21, signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets on May 25th, 2017 and registered a 2-3-1 record with a 2.64 GAA and a .896 SV% in six appearances for Monsters this season in his first-career professional action. Last season, Kivlenieks earned USHL Player and Goaltender of the Year honors and helped the Sioux City Musketeers claim the Anderson Cup as regular-season league champions. Kivlenieks' 36-7-2 mark, with five shutouts, a 1.85 GAA, and a .932 SV% in 49 appearances last year, left the 2016-17 First-Team USHL All-Star atop the league-leaderboard at season's end in terms of wins (1st), shutouts (T1st), GAA (1st), and SV% (1st).
