WINNIPEG, MB – Defenders with good coverage skills are difficult to find. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today added one of those rare players to its roster with the signing of cornerback Marcel Smith.

Smith (6-0, 185, Northwest Missouri State '02, DOB: Oct. 27, 1979 in Kansas City, MO) joins the Big Blue after playing for Northwest Missouri State.

"Marcel is a very good cover corner with good speed and good man-to-man skills," said Brendan Taman, general manager & vice-president of football operations for the Blue Bombers. "He is a solid, dependable corner that rarely gets beat."

THE COLLEGE YEARS – NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS

Smith was a two-year captain for the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, playing cornerback for the school. A psychology major, Smith was a member of D2football.com's Honorable Mention All-Star Team as a senior. He was also a Second-Team All-MIAA Conference All-Star.

Smith posted 34 defensive tackles and 10 pass knockdowns in his senior season. Smith was a Second-Team All-MIAA Conference All-Star as a junior.

THE HIGH-SCHOOL YEARS – CENTER HIGH SCHOOL

Smith is a 1998 graduate of Center High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a two-time All-State All-Star at strong safety.
