
Blue Bombers sign Marcus Smith

WINNIPEG, MB â The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added toughness to their defensive secondary today with the signing of Marcus Smith.
Smith (5-10, 185, Memphis '02, DOB: Aug. 17, 1980 in Memphis, TN) is a defensive back that can play at halfback or on the corner. He comes to the Blue & Gold after attending two NFL camps and playing in NFL-Europe.
"He's an extremely good cover DB that has the ability to play inside," said Brendan Taman, Winnipeg's general manager & vice-president of football operations. "He's a very physical player and is extremely tough. He will have a legitimate chance to claim a roster spot at our halfback position."
THE NFL YEARS â 2003 â INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Smith attended the Indianapolis Colts training camp in 2003 after spending a season playing in NFL-Europe. He was one of 15 players released in the team's final cuts, Aug. 31, 2003.
THE NFL-EUROPE YEARS â 2003 â BARCELONA DRAGONS
The Barcelona Dragons selected Smith in the 6th Round (31st Overall) of the 2003 NFL-Europe Draft, Feb. 5, 2003.
With the Dragons, he recorded 34 defensive tackles, three pass knockdowns, three special teams tackles, two quarterback sacks and one interception.
THE NFL YEARS â 2002 â TENNESSEE TITANS
The Tennessee Titans signed Smith as an undrafted rookie free agent, Apr. 26, 2002. He attended the team's training camp but was cut on the final day of camp.
THE COLLEGE YEARS â MEMPHIS TIGERS
Smith was a three-year starter for the University of Memphis Tigers. He tallied 55 defensive tackles, six pass knockdowns and an interception as a senior.
Starting seven games as a junior, Smith posted 22 defensive tackles and six pass knockdowns. Smith started five games as a sophomore.
THE HIGH-SCHOOL YEARS â HAMILTON WILDCATS
Smith was a runningback and a defensive back for the Hamilton High School Wildcats of Memphis, Tennessee. He also returned kicks and ranked 3rd in the city in punt returns as a senior.
Smith also showcased his speed as a member of the school's track-and-field squad, running on the relay teams.
