Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB â The Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacking corps â arguably the best in the CFL already â just got better.
That's because the CFL club inked high-energy linebacker Ed Smith to a contract today. Smith (6-3, 230, Fairmont State '03, DOB: May 8, 1981 in Wheeling, WV) comes to Winnipeg after most recently playing college football for Fairmont State, the alma mater of head coach Dave Ritchie.
"He's a young guy out of college who is very athletic," said Brendan Taman, general manager & vice-president of football operations for the Big Blue. "Ed is a big guy that can run and tackle very well. His style of play perfectly suits the Canadian game."
THE COLLEGE YEARS â FAIRMONT STATE FIGHTING FALCONS
Smith played four years of NCAA Division II college football for the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons. He started three of those seasons.
As a senior in 2003, Smith gained many honors. Smith was a member of the 2003 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Northeast Region All-Star Team. D2football.com also named him to its All-Northeast Region All-Star Team.
Don Hansen's Football Gazette named him to its Third-Team All-Northeast Region All-Star Side. He was also a First-Team West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Star.
Smith was one of 80 players chosen to play in the 2003 Cactus Bowl for graduating all-stars (East vs. West, Jan. 9, 2004 @ Kingsville, TX).
Smith led the school in defensive tackles as a senior with 93 â a total that placed him 2nd in the WVIAC conference. He added 18 tackles for a loss, six quarterback sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.
He was the WVIAC Player of the Week after a stellar performance against WVU-Tech. He totaled 18 defensive tackles and three tackles for a loss in that game. He also won the award earlier in the season, after a big performance against West Liberty.
Smith, a graduate of Wheeling Park High School, was a First-Team WVIAC All-Star in 2001 and an Honorable Mention WVIAC All-Star in 2002. In 2002, Smith placed 9th in the conference in defensive tackles with 70.
