Blast Fall to Sockers 7-2

The Blast traveled to San Diego Saturday night to matchup with long time rival the San Diego Sockers. In a high intensity matchup the Sockers were able to hand the Blast their second loss of the season. The Sockers defeated the Blast 7-2. The game got off to a slow start with both teams getting a feel for each other. Both teams focused on defense and controlling possession while no goals were recorded in the opening quarter. Blast goalkeeper William Vanzela recorded 4 saves while Pat Healey and Diego Zuniga contributed blocks for the Blast defense.

The second quarter began with the Sockers scoring the first goal of the game and taking a 1-0 lead. Kraig Chiles recorded the goal extending his consecutives games recording a point streak to 62. The Blast were able to answer at the 6:10 mark when Blast captain Pat Healey scored a goal off an assist from Adauto Neto. Blast goalkeeper William Vanzela recorded 9 saves in the first half while the defense in front of him recorded 4 blocks. At the half the game was tied 1-1.

The second half began with the Sockers regaining the lead when Kraig Chiles scored his league leading 41st goal of the season. The Sockers were able to score 3 more goals in the quarter, Ney Almedia recorded a goal at the 2:24 mark and then the after a series of Blast penalties the Sockers were able to take advantage of 2 power plays with goals from Kraig Chiles and Eduardo Valez. The Blast went into the final quarter trailing 5-1.

During the fourth quarter the Blast cut into the lead when Onua Obasi scored his 5th goal of the season off an assist from Tony Donatelli but it would not be enough to mount a comeback. The Sockers scored two goals against the 6th attacker before the final buzzer and were able to defeat the Blast. The final score was 7-2.

The Blast fall to 13-2 on the season. The Blast were led offensively by Pat Healey and Onua Obasi who recorded the only Blast goals of the game. The Blast defense recorded 6 blocks while goalkeeper William Vanzela recorded 13 saves.

The Blast return home next weekend for a divisional matchup against the Rochester Lancers. The game is Friday, February 13th at 7:35p.m. from the Royal Farms Arena.
