Blades Tickled Pink with 6-1 Victory Over Pats
October 7, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
Saskatoon, SK - Offence was on full display at SaskTel Centre Saturday as the Saskatoon Blades defeated the Regina Pats 6-1.
Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick Brandon Lisowsky remained white-hot following up Wednesday's hat-trick vs the Edmonton Oil Kings with a two-goal performance. Captain Trevor Wong extended his point streak to five games with an assist, while forward Tyler Parr netted his first goal of the young season.
The Blades were playing for more than just themselves Saturday as they hosted their annual 'Pink in the Rink' night. In a heartfelt nod to a greater cause, the Blades donned eye-catching pink tape on their sticks during warmup. The sticks are available through an online auction HERE and runs until 9:00am Friday, Oct. 13th.
The Blue and Gold were just as impressive in their own end allowing netminder Austin Elliott to turn aside 14-of-15 shots. The Strathmore, AB product sits 3-0-0-0 on the season.
Saskatoon were ready off the hop against the Pats. A rocking crowd was spoiled early as Nashville Predators prospect Tanner Molendyk scored a beautiful breakaway goal 2:06 into the game. The game's first star added an assist on the Blades fifth goal earning him six points (2G, 4A) in four games this season. Rookie forwards William James and Zach Moore collected their first career WHL point on the goal.
Just past the halfway mark of the first period Lisowsky was the beneficiary of an assist-of-the-year candidate from Anaheim Ducks draft pick Egor Sidorov. Lisowsky tapped home his fifth goal of the season inside the blue paint, and it wasn't the last time the 5-foot-9 sniper would find the scoresheet. Sidorov's assist puts his name on the scoresheet every game since returning from NHL camp.
Lisowsky pounced again before period's end giving the Blades a commanding 3-0 lead. No goaltender's been safe lately from the Blades 2019 first-round pick who leads the team with six goals and nine points. The Blades left no room for the visitors to breath outshooting the Pats 23-5 after 20 minutes.
The Blades penalty kill stood sturdy again fending off two Pats powerplay attempts early in the second. The Blades kept their foot on the throttle as La Salle, MB's own Parr cashed-in for his first goal of the year. The 18-year-old winger missed significant time last season due to injury but seems motivated to make up for lost time already scoring five points in six games.
A powerplay snipe from forward Jordan Keller extended the Blades lead to five just over halfway through the contest. The sophomore center is up to three goals in double the games, two of which have come on the man-advantage.
No mercy was shown by the Blades as forward Lukas Hansen scored another powerplay marker making it 6-0. Hansen's third of the season and second powerplay tally is the Blades fifth powerplay goal in their last ten attempts.
Regina came out in the third with jump as captain Tanner Howe snuck one past Elliott 20 seconds into the frame. The Prince Albert, SK native leads the Pats with nine points (4G, 5A) in seven games. The Bridge City Bunch didn't allow anymore pushback outshooting the visitors 51-15 at the final horn. The Blades improve to 4-2-0-0 on the year and remain undefeated on home ice.
What's Next?
The Blades fill their bellies with Thanksgiving goods this weekend before heading to Edmonton Wednesday for a game against the Oil Kings.
Puck drop is 7:00pm CST.
