Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons historic winning streak finally came to an end Saturday night as the Herd lost to the Mets, 3-2, at Sahlen Field. A wild pitch in the eighth plated the game-deciding run and handed Buffalo their first defeat in two weeks.
The Bisons 12-game win streak was two games better than their previous modern era best, first set in 2002 and then matched again two years later. The streak vaulted the Herd into the race for the best record in Triple-A East, although they are now 1.5 games behind Durham after the Bulls split a twinbill with Norfolk on Saturday.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was also victorious on Saturday night, erasing a six-run deficit to beat Rochester, 11-9. The Bisons lead over the RailRiders is now four games with a magic number of 4 to clinch the Northeast Division.
Buffalo and Syracuse were tied at two when Mets infielder Cheslor Cuthbert hit a one-out double off Bisons reliever Rafael Dolis in the eighth inning. Mason Williams then grounded out to Tyler White at first base, but the play proved critical as it move Cuthbert up 90 feet to third base. Dolis then threw a wild pitch to the next batter and Cuthbert scampered home with a head-first slide.
The Bisons had a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning as Richard Urena reached on a fielder's choice and then got to third base thanks to a one out single from Cullen Large. When Rodrigo Vigil flew out to shallow left field, Urena decided to test the arm of Syracuse's Mark Payton. The play was doomed from the start, however, as Urena slipped on his first step off the bag and was eventually tagged out at the plate for the inning's final out.
There were several missed opportunities for both teams throughout the game as Syracuse left 11 men on base and Buffalo stranded 10. The teams went a combined 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
The Bisons fell down 2-0 in the contest as Travis Blankenhorn homered for the Mets in the second inning and Tomas Nido singled home a run in the Syracuse half of the fifth. Buffalo then scored unearned runs in the fifth and seventh inning to pull even at 2-2. Forrest Wall and Christian Colon drove home funs with sacrifice flies.
Cavan Biggio joined the Bisons on an MLB injury rehab assignment on Saturday and went 1-3 with a double. The Herd also welcomed back Kevin Smith to the team, who went 1-4 with a single and three strikeouts.
The Bisons will play their final regular season home game on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. as the host the Mets one more time before a seven-game roadtrip to Rochester.
