Buffalo Bisons News Release
TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Charlotte Knights in the third game of a four-game set from Knights Stadium (7:15 p.m.). The Herd trails Charlotte, 0-2, in the series and is now 2-4 in their eight-game roadtrip. On the mound tonight will be LHP Aaron Laffey. The southpaw did not earn a decision against Durham on Friday despite 6.1 innings of three-run ball. The Knights will counter with RHP Gavin Floyd.
LOOKING NORTH: The Bisons are out of top spot in the division for the first time since May 4. Buffalo's reign in first placed lasted 74 days. The Herd can reclaim the lead tonight with a win and some help as they are only 0.5 games behind Scranton/WB. After this series against Charlotte, 43 of their final 47 games will be against IL North division opponents.
SEEKING THE SPLIT: Trailing Charlotte 0-2, the Bisons will need a win tonight to avoid their first series loss in over a month. The Bisons lost 4 of 6 games played at Richmond, June 9-12. Since then, the team has collected series wins against Louisville, Scranton/WB and Rochester to go along with three splits. Buffalo has lost just three series all season (8 wins, 13 splits).
HE'S NO JOKE: LHP Aaron Laffey is coming of his first no-decision in 11 games this year. Last Friday's effort snapped a streak of seven wins in his last seven games. In eight outings since June 2, Laffey is 7-0 with a 1.53ERA (53.0IP, 44H, 11R, 9ER, 9BB, 47K). If Laffey had five more innings pitched this season, his ERA would qualify as the fifth lowest mark in the IL. Combined with his 4-1 start with Double-A Akron, Laffey's 11 wins and 2.92ERA lead the Indians minor league system.
TWICE TWO: Yesterday, outfielder Jason Cooper became the second Bisons player to hit two home runs in a game on this roadtrip (fifth on the year). Jonathan Van Every hit two out on Sunday in Durham. Cooper now has 36 home runs in his Bisons career, 13th most in the Modern Era (1985-on). His 157 Bisons' RBI are 9th most in the Modern Era (3rd among lefties).
SOLID RELIEF: With his effort last night, RHP Mike Koplove has thrown nine consecutive scoreless outings. He has allowed just five hits while striking out nine in his last 8.2 innings of work.
