Hughes and Karstens to make rehab starts

July 18, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees will see the addition of two Major League pitchers during the upcoming Charlotte series at PNC Field.

RHP Jeff Karstens will take the mound on Sunday at 5 p.m. while RHP Phil Hughes gets the nod on Monday at 7 p.m.

Jeff Karstens is rehabbing a broken right fibula suffered on April 28. The 24-year-old right-hander's most recent start was a rehab appearance for Trenton on July 17. In 5.0 innings, he allowed four hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out five. In two starts for the NY Yankees he was 0-1 with a 14.54 ERA.

Hughes, 21, is making his return after a pair of injuries. On May 1 at Texas, the Yankees' top prospect pulled a hamstring in the middle of a potential no-hitter. Hughes had not allowed a run through 6.1 innings when the injury occurred. While rehabbing the injury in Tampa he suffered a setback after rolling an ankle.

Hughes started this afternoon for Trenton and allowed one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts in a 5-1 Thunder win. It was his third official rehab start and second with Trenton.

With the SWB Yankees earlier this season he was 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts. For New York he was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts.

Tickets for both games can be purchased online at swbyankees.com, www.ticketmaster.com, in person at the PNC Field Box Office, by calling (570)-693-4100 or at local Ticketmaster outlets.

The PNC Field Box Office is open 10-5 Monday through Friday, 10-4 on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to the end of the game on game days.
