Buffalo Bisons News Release

TODAY'S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons take on the Charlotte Knights in the second game of a four-game series from Knights Stadium (12:15 p.m.). The Knights struck first in the series with last night's 11-4 victory. The defeat drops the Herd's record to 2-3 on their current eight-game roadtrip. On the mound today will be RHP Sean Smith. The righty is coming off a seven-inning victory over Durham last Thursday. The Knights will counter with RHP Eduardo Sierra.

NORTHERN LEADERS: The Bisons have been in first place in the IL North division since May 5 (74 consecutive days). The lead is on the line today, however, as the Herd has just a 0.5 game lead on second-place Scranton/WB.

VS. THE KNIGHTS: This is the Bisons first series of the season against Charlotte. The Knights won seven of the eight games played last year. Last night's victory gave Charlotte the 37-36 edge in the series since the Bisons rejoined the International League. It's the only losing record the Herd has against a team in the IL since 1998.

ROAD WARRIORS: With 28 wins in 48 games, the Buffalo Bisons have the second best road record in the International League (.583 winning percentage). RHP Sean Smith is 4-3 with a 3.91ERA in his 10 games away from Dunn Tire Park.

MEET MR. SMITH: RHP Sean Smith gets the ball today, looking to improve on his solid season. Smith leads the Bisons in wins (8), and strikeouts (58) and is second in innings pitched (91.2IP). Smith has won three of his last four starts, going 3-0 with a 2.33ERA since June 23 (27.0IP, 25H, 7R, 7ER, 11BB, 13K).

SOLID RELIEF: It has been more than two months since RHP Matt Miller has allowed an earned run. Since May 19, he has thrown 16 consecutive outings without allowing an earned run. In the 16.2 innings of work, Miller has allowed just nine hits, four unearned runs and eight walks while striking out 21 batters.

NOT ALONE: Also doing solid work in the pen is LHP Juan Lara and RHP Mike Koplove. Lara has stuck out 12 over 11 consecutive scoreless outings (11.2IP, 6H, BB). Koplove has blanked opponents in each of his last eight games. He has struck out seven while allowing just five hits in 7.2 innings over that span.
