Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Scranton/Wilkes-Barre used 15 hits and five Indianapolis miscues to score a 12-1 win before a crowd of 6,357 Tuesday evening at Victory Field.
The Yankees improve to 52-42 overall and 28-23 on the road, while the Indians fall to 49-46 on the season and 28-19 at home. Scranton/W-B, which has won eight of its last 10 overall, takes over first place in the International League's North Division.
Scranton/W-B exploded for 12 unanswered runs after Indianapolis scored its only run in the first. Just two of the 12 runs were earned due to the five Tribe errors and one passed ball.
The Yankees jumped ahead with four runs in the third. 2B Chris Basak started things with a single to left before C Raul Chavez reached on a two-base throwing error. Both runners then came plateward on the combination of CF Brett Gardner's single to left and another miscue. Gardner eventually scored on the third error of the frame before LF Kevin Reese smashed his eighth homer of the campaign -- a solo shot to right.
Scranton/W-B added two runs in the sixth. 1B Shelley Duncan opened the frame with a single to left and moved to third on SS Angel Chavez's double to center. Both runners eventually scored on a fumbled and kicked ball to the left side of the infield.
The Yankees poured it on with six insurance runs in the seventh. RF Justin Christian, Reese, DH Erubiel Durazo and Chavez all singled. Gardner highlighted the frame moments later with a two-run triple to right as Basak and Chavez trotted to the dish.
Scranton/W-B LHP Chase Wright (5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 7 BB, 3 SO) earned the win, improving to 8-3. RHP Runelvys Hernandez (5.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) did not allow an earned run, but suffered the loss in his Indianapolis debut.
Gardner (3-for-6, 1 R, 3 RBI), Christian (2-for-5, 1 R), Reese (2-for-5, 2 R), S. Duncan (2-for-4, 1 R), A. Chavez (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) and R. Chavez (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) all recorded multi-hit efforts for the Yankees.
DH Luis Matos (2-for-4) registered the only multi-hit performance for the Indians.
The Tribe's only run came in the first when 3B Russ Johnson hammered a double to right and scored on SS Brian Bixler's single up the middle.
The Tribe, which sat atop the IL's West Division for 69 straight days earlier this season, has dropped eight of its last nine and 18 of its last 24 overall.
The two clubs return to Victory Field on Wednesday at 2 p.m., for game three of the four-game series. RHP Steven White is scheduled to start for Scranton/W-B, while LHP Michael Tejera is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
