TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons face the Syracuse SkyChiefs in the first game of a four-game set from Dunn Tire Park (7:05 p.m.). Last night, the Herd defeated Norfolk, 3-1, to close out a 5-3 road trip. Javier Cardona's two-run double in the 6th inning was more than enough for RHP Steve Watkins to win his seventh game on the year. Now, with only six home games remaining on the regular-season schedule, the Bisons will host the Chiefs with RHP Jeremy Guthrie to the mound tonight. On Thursday, Guthrie earned his team-leading 11th victory in a Bisons' 3-2 win over Richmond. He will face LHP Zach Jackson, who was victorious in his last outing against Rochester (6.0IP, 7H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 4K).
WIDENING THE GAP: When the Bisons left on their eight-game Virginia road trip, they had a 1.5 game lead over second place Rochester in the IL North. As they return home from their successful trip, Buffalo's lead in the division has grown to 3.0 games. The success against Richmond and Norfolk is due in large part to the starting pitching. In the eight games, the starting rotation threw 46.1 innings and only allowed 12 earned runs (2.33 ERA).
VS SKYCHIEFS: The Bisons have not faced Syracuse since June 10, but the teams split 10 games in the first two months of the season. The Herd won the last two games of the season series, including a 12-4 win at Dunn Tire Park on June 10. Jeremy Guthrie started that game for Buffalo and picked up the win with six innings of work (8H, 4ER, 3K)
100 CLUB: Ernie Young picked up his 100th hit on the season last night with an RBI-single in the 2nd inning. He joins Andy Abad (112), Ryan Garko (127), Jake Gautreau (102), Mike Kinkade (114) and Brandon Phillips (101) as Bison hitters that have reached the 100-hit plateau. On the year, Young is hitting .276 with 20 homeruns and 74 RBI.
HEATING UP: Catcher Javier Cardona extended his hitting streak to five games last night (.375, 6-16, 2 2B, 3RBI). Since joining the Bisons from Double-A Akron on July 26, Cardona is hitting .303 (10-33) with one homerun and four RBI.
ROSTER MOVES: The Cleveland Indians announced today that RHP Andrew Brown was optioned down to Buffalo and LHP Brian Tallet was recalled to the parent club. Brown, who is 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA and two saves in 45 games for the Bisons this year, did not appear in a game for Cleveland. This will be Tallet's fourth stint with the Tribe this season.
