
Borchard tops in Charlotte

FORT MILL, S.C. - In his first at-bat of the Charlotte Knights-Toledo Mud Hens game Tuesday night, Joe Borchard knocked a two-RBI single up the middle for his 423rd career hit in Charlotte pinstripes, overtaking Jesus Alfaro (Charlotte O's, 1982-84) to become the franchise's all-time hits leader.
In 121 games this season, Borchard is batting .257 (114-444) with 25 home runs, 18 doubles and 62 RBIs. Along with Syracuse's John Ford-Griffin and Pawtucket's Kelly Shoppach, Borchard is currently fourth in the International League in home runs.
He entered the 2005 campaign with 309 career hits, good for10th place in the Charlotte record books, and already held the Charlotte Knights all-time hits record, now 138 hits over Brian Daubach (285, 1997-98).
A first-round pick by the Chicago White Sox out of Stanford University in 2000, Borchard has spent parts of the past four seasons with the Knights. In 434 games with the Knights, he is a career .261 hitter (423-1618) with 94 doubles, 74 home runs and 222 RBIs.
