Charlotte Knights News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. -- With a two-RBI single in his first at-bat of the game, Joe Borchard tallied his 423rd career hit in Charlotte pinstripes to become the franchise's all-time hits leader, overtaking Jesus Alfaro (1982-84).
Guillermo Reyes made it 3-0 with his first Triple-A home run - a solo shot in the third, and Brandon McCarthy (7-7) fanned ten as the Knights went on to beat the Toledo Mud Hens 5-3 Tuesday night and take the series two games to one.
Greg Norton (3-for-4, 2B, RBI) paced the attack as every Knight in the lineup got at least one hit. Ross Gload (2-for-3) also doubled twice, and Roosevelt Brown added two hits.
McCarthy was a riddle that the Mud Hens could not solve, allowing just one run -not until in the eighth -on six hits. Jack Hannahan scored off a Gookie Dawkins double to score Toledo's lone run. McCarthy, whose season-high in strikeouts was 11 back on April 29, struck out ten and yielded just one walk, also in the eighth before yielding to Jeff Bajenaru two outs into the inning.
The Knights scored the final two of their five runs in seventh off reliever Doug Creek. Willie Harris led off the inning with a single and, after stealing second, scored on a single from Norton.
For the third straight hit of the inning, Brown dropped a single into left to put Norton in scoring position on second. Norton moved to third on a ground out by Jorge Toca, and Gload doubled to the right side to send him in.
Toledo finished with eight hits as Ryan Raburn (2-for-4, 2B) was the only Mud Hen to collect more than one. Starter Kenny Baugh (11-8) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits in four innings.
The Knights head to Durham to play a two-game series before returning home on Friday to face the Norfolk Tides for four. Dennis Ulacia (3-6, 6.55) and Arnie Munoz (7-13, 3.88) are set to make the starts for the Knights.
