Bisons Game Notes August 28th
August 28, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons face the Rochester Red Wings in the first game of a three-game set at Frontier Field (7:05 p.m.). The Herd has gone 2-4 so far on their season-long 9-game roadtrip that has already stopped at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Pawtucket. On Tuesday, the Bisons return to Buffalo for their final four home games of the season.
vs. THE WINGS: The Bisons are 4-7 against their closest rivals so far this season. The Herd has not won a series against Rochester in 2009, earning just one split of a four-game set at Frontier Field, July 4-6. Dating back to last season, the Bisons are just 5-16 in their last 21 games against the Red Wings.
NOT SO PETTY: LHP Adam Pettyjohn is 2-3 with a 3.00ERA in his six appearances for the Herd. The southpaw pitched well enough to win on Sunday against the Yankees as he allowed just two runs in seven innings in a 2-1 defeat to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Pettyjohn has allowed two runs or less in three of his last four starts, including seven shutout innings on August 16 in Syracuse.
MOUND WORK: Bisons starting pitchers have been dominating of late. In the team's last 10 games, the rotation has combined to post a 2.10ERA. Herd starters have allowed just 13 runs in 55.2 innings with 41 strikeouts to only 11 walks. LHP Adam Pettyjohn has contributed back-to-back quality starts as part of the rotation's recent success.
THE HIT-MAN: OF Jesus Feliciano hit streak reached seven games last night. Since August 21, the outfielder has averaged .429 (12-28) with a pair of doubles and an RBI. However, Feliciano fell one back of Gwinnett's Barbaro Canizares for the league lead in hits. Canizares had two hits last night, so his total of 139 is just ahead of Feliciano's 138. Feliciano still leads the Bisons in runs (51), doubles (29) and stolen bases (12).
HOMERING HERD: The Bisons got their 23rd home run in August last night as INF Javier Castillo went deep for the Herd. The blast was Castillo's seventh on the year and his fifth with the Bisons. The 23 home runs are the most for the Bisons in any month of the season. The team hit 20 homers in 30 games in May. Buffalo had just 10 long balls in each of the last two months.
MEET THE METS: The New York Mets' (58-70) used an offensive explosion to defeat the Marlins yesterday afternoon, 10-3. New York's balanced attack featured at least two hits from each position player in their lineup. Former Bisons C Omir Santos had two doubles while former Herd OF Angel Pagan singled and homered. INF Dan Murphy had two doubles and three RBI in the win for New York.
