Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have purchased the contract of pitcher Jeremy Sowers from the Bisons roster. The 23-year old southpaw is expected to make his Major League debut for the Tribe on Sunday against Cincinnati.
Cleveland had a roster spot available after placing outfielder Jason Michaels on the 15-day disabled list.
Sowers had spent the entire 2006 season with the Bisons, leading the team and the International League in most pitching categories. In 15 games, he was 9-1 with a 1.39ERA, the lowest ERA in all of Triple-A baseball (97.1IP, 78H, 20R, 15ER, 29BB, 54K). He is currently 1st in the IL in ERA, T1st in wins (9) and shutouts (2), T2nd in complete games (2) and 3rd in innings pitched (97.1). He also ranks 1st on the Bisons roster in starts (15) and strikeouts (54) and 2nd in walks and hits/nine innings pitched (1.10).
Sowers worked five or more innings in 14 of his 15 starts with 11 quality starts and two complete-game, seven-inning shutouts. He also allowed just one home run while holding IL hitters to a .224 batting average.
Sowers was the 6th overall pick in the first round of the 2004 draft by the Indians after pitching three years at Vanderbilt. Last season, he pitched at three levels and was named the Tribe's Minor League Pitcher of the Year (Bob Feller Award) with a combined record of 14-4 with a 2.37ERA.
