Charlotte Knights News Release

Due to heavy rain that hit the Charlotte area Friday night the Knights and Tides were forced to double dip with two shortened seven inning games Saturday evening.

Shorter ballgames do not always mean fewer runs. The Knights offense was able to find a rhythm in the early going of game one and carried the momentum over through game two sweeping the Tides in the Saturday doubleheader. Charlotte outscored Norfolk 19-7 through both games while tallying 24 hits compared to Norfolk's 15.

Charlotte went deep six times through 14 innings.

With the two wins Charlotte improves their record to 52-23. The Knights are a perfect 7-0 against the Tides this season.

In the first game Charlotte catcher Chris Stewart led the way offensively going two-for-three with two home runs and three RBIs. The Knights added to that total as one of shortstop Jorge Velandia's three hits was a home run allowing Charlotte to cruise to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Tides in game one.

Charlotte starter Heath Phillips got the win and improved his record to 10-2 on the season. Phillips threw seven innings giving up just one run off five hits and striking out four. With his 10th win Phillips moves into first place in the International League.

Game two offered much of the same story as the Knights scored early and often drowning the Tides 13-6. Ryan Sweeney, Ruben Rivera and Josh Fields all homered in the second game. Fields added two singles and scored three times to help elevate the Knights to the win.

The final game of the four game series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon with a 2:15 first pitch time. Tim Redding will get the start on the mound for the Knights. He will battle Norfolk's Jose Lima.
