Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right fielder Adam Boeve led off the bottom of the 12th with a 384-foot homer to left field as Indianapolis picked up a thrilling 6-5 win over Richmond in front of 12,328 Saturday evening at Victory Field.
It was the Tribe's second "walk-off" win of the series and third of the season. Yurendell de Caster blasted a two-run dinger to give Indianapolis a 4-2 (9 inn.) win over Ottawa on April 21, while Chris Truby roped an RBI single to give the Indians a 1-0 (8 inn.) victory over Richmond on Friday.
Indianapolis improves to 40-34 on the season, while Richmond falls to 27-48 overall. The Indians remain one game ahead of Louisville in the International League's West Division. Sunday will be the Tribe's 64th straight day atop the division.
Indians LHP Mike Johnston (2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) escaped jams in the 10th and 11th to give his offense a chance to win.
Richmond had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th, but CF Jamal Strong bounced into a fielder's choice and PH Jonathan Schuerholz struck out swinging. The Braves then put two runners in scoring position with one out in the 11th, but LF Gregor Blanco popped up to short left center and 3B Martin Prado struck out swinging.
Johnston took a no-decision, while RHP Scott Strickland (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) improved to 3-1 with the win.
Richmond RHP Franklin Nunez (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) worked a scoreless 10th and 11th, but gave up the long ball to Boeve -- his third at the Triple-A level -- and fell to 1-5 with the loss.
Indianapolis collected four runs over the first three innings to take a 4-2 lead. CF Rajai Davis scored on 1B Chris Richard's sacrifice fly in the first. LHP Sean Burnett followed by slapping a single through the left side to plate 3B Mike Edwards in the second. Edwards and Boeve then came up with RBI base knocks in the third.
The teams traded runs until Richmond scored once in the eighth and again in the ninth. SS Tony Pena reached on a fielder's choice in the eighth and eventually scored on Blanco's infield single to the right side. Strong then singled to center in the ninth and came plateward on Pena's double to left center.
Strong finished the contest 5-for-6 with one run, two doubles and two RBI. He became the first individual to register five base knocks against Indianapolis this season. Tony Pena added a 4-for-6 effort with one run, one RBI and two doubles, while C Brayan Pena went 3-for-6 with one score.
Boeve turned in a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI for Indianapolis. 1B Chris Richard added a 10th-inning single and has now reached base safely in 35 consecutive games -- the longest streak of any IL batter in 2006.
Neither starter -- Richmond RHP Daniel Curtis (5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 7 SO) or Burnett (5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) -- factored in the decision.
The Braves collected a season-high 20 hits in the contest, but left 19 men on base. The Indians managed 12 base knocks, but stranded 13 on the night.
The two clubs wrap up the four-game series Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. LHP Mike Connolly is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Jason Shiell is expected to get the nod for Richmond. The first 4,000 fans will receive a Victory Field Rubik's Cube courtesy of Pepsi and Ivy Tech.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Sunday's pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
