KINSTON, NC - An outstanding start from Cameron Bishop gave the Frederick Keys (23-37, 52-77) a 4-1 victory over the Down East Wood Ducks (34-27, 84-47) on Monday night at Grainger Stadium. Bishop (2-9) allowed just one run while he struck out seven batters over a career-high eight innings. The southpaw became the 11th pitcher this season to last eight inning in the Carolina League, completing the feat on just 91 pitches.

The Keys jumped on top in the opening frame thanks to a clutch hit from J.C. Escarra. With a man in scoring position and two-outs, Escarra hit a sharp ground-ball into left-field that brought home the run to put the Keys up 1-0.

Bishop's only lapse came in the second inning. Sherten Apostel led off with a single and advanced to third after two consecutive ground outs. With Apostel on third base, Bishop threw a wild pitch that allowed him to score to tie the game.

After that, Bishop was efficient. He worked around a base runner in the third and fourth frames before setting down nine straight. In the bottom of the seventh, he allowed a pair of singles with two-outs but struck out Bubba Thompson to end the inning. He retired the side in the eighth.

The Keys broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning. Patrick Dorrian hit a double on an 0-2 pitch and advanced to third on a wild pitch. New-comer Ben Breazeale then knocked him in to give the Keys a 2-1 lead.

In the ninth, the offense punched across some insurance runs. With a man on, Escarra doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position which warranted a pitching change. Francisco Villegas came on and walked Breazeale and then Chris Clare to bring in a run. After Villegas picked up a strike out, he hit Jean Carrillo to force another run before he escaped the bases loaded situation.

Diogenes Almengo (S, 13) closed out the ninth and picked up a pair of strikeouts while sealing the victory.

Reid Anderson (6-8) was dealt the loss after allowing the Keys' second run to cross in the seventh. He pitched well, tying a career-high with seven innings pitched where he struck out three and allowed five hits.

Bishop, though, was better. He allowed just two runners in scoring position all evening and did not give up an extra-base hit.

The Keys and Wood Ducks continue their four-game set on Tuesday, August 27. RHP Blaine Knight (1-10, 5.90) takes the mound for Frederick against RHP Scott Engler (3-0, 1.54) for Down East. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm with pregame coverage starting at 6:45pm on the Tune In app and frederickkeys.com.
