Biscuits Sweep Southern League Weekly Awards

July 6, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Southern League has announced that RHP Jake Faria and INF Patrick Leonard have given the Biscuits a clean sweep of the Southern League player of the week awards from June 28 to July 5.

Faria, 21, made his second start with the Biscuits on Fourth of July against the Biloxi Shuckers. The former tenth round pick went seven no-hit innings while matching Mitch Talbot (2006) with a Biscuits record 14 strikeouts for the win. He left the game after seven innings with his pitch count having reached 108. The Shuckers broke up the no-hitter in the eighth inning.

The Rays promoted Faria to the Biscuits after he went 10-1 with a 1.33 ERA in 12 appearances with the High-A Charlotte Stone Crabs. Faria is making a strong bid for Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year in his fifth season of professional baseball.

Leonard, 22, hit .500 (9-for-18) this past week and scored five runs with a home run. Leonard has hit .438 in the second half and takes a 12-game hit streak - the longest active streak in the Southern League - into Monday's game against the Shuckers. The Rays acquired Leonard in a trade with the Kansas City Royals where James Shields was sent to the Royals and Wil Myers came to the Rays in December of 2012.

Leonard is the first hitter from the Biscuits to win the weekly award while Faria joins Jaime Schultz, Jared Mortensen and Blake Snell as the fourth pitcher from the Biscuits to win Southern League Pitcher of the Week.
