Biscuits Pull Away Late Monday, Win 5-1 to Take Series Lead

July 6, 2015 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - Hyped as a great pitching matchup, Southern League All-Stars' Tyler Wagner and Blake Snell didn't disappoint, but Wagner, despite his 10th quality start and tying a season-high with seven strikeouts fell short in the 5-1 loss at Riverwalk Stadium. The loss on Monday positions the Shuckers on the brink of dropping a series for the first time in their last 10, since losing three of five to the Jackson Generals May 11-15. Montgomery leads the five-game series 2-1.

Montgomery (6-4) struck first in the bottom of the first with two unearned runs against Wagner. Tyler Goeddel reached on an error by third baseman Brandon Macias (12, BB) with one out. Cameron Seitzer followed with a single and Johnny Field, Jr. reached on a fielder's choice before Justin O'Conner brought in the first run of the game with a double. Wagner balked home Field to put the Shuckers in a 2-0 hole after the first inning.

Biloxi (6-5) got on the board in the fourth with an RBI triple from Orlando Arcia (1x3, RBI, 3B) to score Nathan Orf (2x4, R) from first to put the Shuckers down a run. A walk to Michael Reed (0x2, 2 BB) put runners on the corners, but back-to-back strikeouts to Nick Ramirez (0x3, BB) and Victor Roache (0x4) ended the threat. Arcia took the team-lead with his fifth triple and 31st extra-base hit of the season. Arcia also leads the league with 95 hits.

Wagner (6-3) coasted through the sixth, retiring 14 of 15 batters after the first, but the Biscuits broke the game open with a three-run seventh to make it 5-1. Three consecutive one-out singles led to the first run to cross for Montgomery, leading to Wagner being removed for Jed Bradley (1.2 IP, R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 SO). The Shuckers' starter tied a season high with seven strikeouts, and allowed four runs - two earned - on six hits and a walk. Bradley allowed another single and issued a walk before a hot-shot by Goeddel got by Orf at second, allowing two runs to score.

Snell (6-2), the All-Star Game starter for the North Division worked five innings and picked up the win, striking out six and walking two in the outing.

Biloxi will try to force a rubber match with a win on Tuesday night against the Biscuits. RHP Johnny Hellweg (0-0, --) will make his first start for the Shuckers, while the Biscuits will send out RHP Ryne Stanek (3-2, 3.82).
