Southern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

July 6, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for June 29 through July 5. The Montgomery Biscuits swept the awards, as righthander Jake Faria was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while third baseman Patrick Leonard earned Player of the Week honors.

In just his second start at the Double-A level, Montgomery pitcher Jake Faria made his presence known to Southern League batters. Over seven hitless innings, the righty from La Palma, California did not allow a run, while walking three. Pacing the Biscuits to a 7-2 win over the visiting Biloxi Shuckers on the Fourth of July, Faria tied a Montgomery franchise record with 14 strikeouts, tossing 71 of his 108 pitches for strikes. A Florida State League All-Star last month, this is his first career weekly award.

Hitting safely in all five contests last week, Biscuits third baseman Patrick Leonard led the league with a .500 batting average, .571 on-base percentage, .833 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.405. Furthermore, he posted top-five numbers with five runs, nine hits, four extra-base hits, 15 total bases and three doubles. The St. Johns, Florida native added a homerun, three RBI and a stolen base. Leonard's most impressive performances came in back-to-back contests on July 4 and 5 against Biloxi, in which he went a combined 4-for-8 at the plate with a four runs, a double and an RBI. This is his fourth career Player of the Week award. After he earned Appalachian League honors in 2012, he was twice honored by the Florida State League last season.
