Biscuits Score Early, Defeat Smokies 8-4

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (61-69/26-34) scored five runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Tennessee Smokies (65-64/32-28) 8-2 Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Willie Argo led off with a single in the fifth and was followed up by a Ryan Brett walk and Kes Carter single to load the bases. A sac-fly by Taylor Motter then scored Argo to tie the game at three. Cameron Seitzer then walked to load the bases again and a single from Richie Shaffer scored Brett and Carter to give the Biscuits a 5-3. The Biscuits weren't done just yet as Luke Maile doubled and scored Seitzer and Shaffer to extend their lead to 7-3.

Shaffer who played as the designated hitter went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and scored three runs.

Tennessee start Ivan Pineyro (0-3) only pitched 2.1 innings and gave up seven earned runs off six hits, three walks and one home run to get the loss. Tony Zych, Zach Cates, and Jeff Lorick shared the last 5.5 innings and combined to give up one unearned run.

Victor Mateo (12-9) dealt six innings and allowed three earned runs off seven hits with one walk to get the win.

The Biscuits travel to Pensacola Friday and will start game one of the series at 6:30 pm. The pitching matchup will include right-handers Michael Colla while the Wahoos have not yet announced their starter.
