Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (24-36, 55-75) held off multiple rallies by the surging Jacksonville Suns (35-25, 71-59) to earn a 7-6 victory in Thursday night's series finale from Bragan Field. The Suns won the series three games to two.

Drew Hayes (W, 5-3) picked up the win for Pensacola after working two innings in relief, giving up two runs (both earned) on three hits with three strikeouts in his winning effort.

Shane Dyer (SV, 18) nailed down his 18th save of the year by facing the minimum three hitters in a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning.

Trevor Williams (L, 0-1) took the loss in his Double-A debut, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work.

Frankie Reed gave up one run (earned) on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in his three innings of relief.

Collin Cargill worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning, inducing three groundouts in his blemish-free inning.

A recurring theme in the series was the Wahoos scoring first inning runs and that continued in Thursday's series finale. Travis Mattair's two-out RBI single put Pensacola ahead by a 1-0 score after one half-inning of play.

The Suns answered right back by batting around and scoring three times to take the lead in the bottom of the first. A two-base throwing error on a pickoff attempt by pitcher Michael Lorenzen and a throwing error on right fielder Bryson Smith allowed Brent Keys to score from first on the play to tie the game up. Jacksonville then received a solo home run from Austin Barnes (HR, 8) and a two-out RBI single from Terrence Dayleg gave the Suns in front 3-1 with one inning in the books.

But Pensacola was unfazed by Jacksonville's early runs, re-taking the lead by scoring four runs of their own in the top of the second. A two-run double from Yorman Rodriguez, Kyle Waldrop RBI single and a Travis Mattair RBI fielder's choice put Pensacola ahead 5-3 in the top of the second.

The Wahoos grabbed a run in the top of the third as Michael Lorenzen helped his own cause with a two-out RBI single to extend Pensacola's lead to 6-3.

Jacksonville used the longball to cut Pensacola's lead to one in the bottom of the fifth. Joe Benson's (HR, 9) two-out, two run homer cut the Blue Wahoos' advantage to 6-5 with five innings complete.

The Blue Wahoos got one of those runs right back in the top of the sixth, taking a 7-5 lead on a Yorman Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

The Suns again pulled to within a run after scoring a lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Brent Keys scored on Brady Shoemaker's sacrifice fly to right field to cut it to a 7-6 Wahoos lead after seven innings.

Despite the loss, the Suns won 20 of the 30 meetings against the Blue Wahoos on the 2014 season.

The Suns will now travel to Tennessee to begin a five-game series with the Smokies on Friday, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET from Smokies Stadium. The Suns are set to throw out right-hander Jose Urena (11-8, 3.47) for the opener, while the Smokies will counter with a righty Felix Pena (2-2, 4.50).

Suns fans can listen to Friday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
